AutoCAD vs SolidWorks: Which CAD Course Should You Choose?

If you are looking at a CAD course in Bangalore, two names come up again and again: AutoCAD and SolidWorks. They are both CAD tools, but they solve different problems. Picking the right one — or the right order to learn them — depends on the kind of work you want to do.

What AutoCAD is built for

AutoCAD is a general-purpose drafting tool. It is strongest at 2D technical drawings: floor plans, machine part drawings, electrical schematics, site layouts and fabrication drawings. It is used across mechanical, civil, electrical and architectural teams because almost every industry still produces and reads 2D drawing sets. AutoCAD also does 3D, but its 3D is more manual than a dedicated modelling package.

What SolidWorks is built for

SolidWorks is a parametric 3D modelling package aimed at product and mechanical design. You build features (extrudes, cuts, fillets), assemble parts, check how they fit and move, run basic simulation, and generate drawings automatically from the model. If a dimension changes, the model and its drawings update. This makes it the tool of choice for machine design, sheet-metal, product development and tooling.

The key differences at a glance

  • Workflow: AutoCAD draws lines that represent an object; SolidWorks builds the object itself and derives drawings from it.
  • Dimension: AutoCAD is primarily 2D with some 3D; SolidWorks is 3D-first.
  • Industries: AutoCAD is broad (civil, MEP, architecture, manufacturing); SolidWorks is focused on mechanical and product design.
  • Output: Both produce industry-standard drawing sets, but SolidWorks keeps them linked to a live model.

Which one should you learn first?

Match it to your goal:

  • You want a drafting or detailing job: start with AutoCAD. It is the fastest route to a first role and is expected almost everywhere.
  • You want to be a design engineer or work in product development: prioritise SolidWorks (or another 3D package like Creo or NX), then add AutoCAD for documentation.
  • You are a mechanical/automobile student: most learners do both — AutoCAD Mechanical for drawings and SolidWorks for modelling — because job descriptions frequently list both.

How this maps to jobs in Bangalore

Manufacturing, automotive, tool-design and machine-building companies around Bangalore hire for CAD draftsmen, design engineers and detailers. A portfolio that shows a clean 2D drawing set and a modelled assembly is far stronger in interviews than knowing one tool in isolation.

How EdVixa teaches them

At EdVixa Learning Solutions in HSR Layout, the Mechanical CAD track covers AutoCAD Mechanical, SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor, Fusion 360, Creo and NX, along with CAE tools like Ansys and HyperMesh. Training is hands-on and project-based, in classroom or live-online mode, with 100% placement assistance.
